Rory McIlroy on his second round | “It tested my patience”

After a frustrating second round 73 for the world number 7, Rory McIlroy gave his thoughts on his round at the 2018 Irish Open and how he feels going into the weekend.

“It’s tough. I’ve kept saying all week it’s a matter of putting your ball in, play off the tee and if you can do that, you can score and have control of your golf ball. When you don’t hit fairways it’s tough to get anywhere close to the hole.

“The rest of the round was ok. I hit my drives well and irons. It was just another one of those days where I couldn’t quite get it going. All I can do is keep giving myself those chances and not get too frustrated and just keep knocking on the door”, he said.

“The way it’s playing right now, this golf course is the way a links should play, it’s fantastic. It tested my patience. Mumbling a bit to myself going from the 18th green to the first tee. If you try to take too much on off the tee, it’s not worth it. I’m here for the weekend and at least give myself the opportunity to shoot a low one. It’s just a matter of being patient.

When asked what his thought are going into the weekend in the position he is in, here is what he had to say.

“I think this is my second made cut in the last six years. I’m glad I’m around for the weekend. It’s a tournament I’ve always wanted to play well at. It's not nice missing [the cut] especially as tournament host. It’s nice to play another few days and hopefully climb my way up the leaderboard.

“It’s a great atmosphere out there it’s enjoyable to play in front of and hopefully I can give them something to cheer about over the last couple of days”.
