Risteárd Cooper reflects on 20 years of Aprés Match

Risteárd Cooper joined Sunday's Off the Ball to reflect on 20 years of Aprés Match as the World Cup in Russia approaches.

Barry Murphy, Risteárd Cooper and Gary Cooke first hit our screens for the 1998 tournament in France and have been ever-present since.

Their light-hearted approach to football commentary offers a comedic break to the serious business of football analysis.

"I think it depends on who you connect with and what you connect with'" he told Joe. "I've always been obsessed with commentators obviously but certain commentators have a way of delivering something that seem more fascinating and more interesting that something is taking place that commands all your attention whereas other people, maybe Peter Collins don't do that for you as much.

"Peter is a great guy but he's not a commentator - he doesn't have that, I guess, gravitas that say Barry Davis would have or David Coleman had or even tennis commentators like Dan Maskell - that kind of era.

"But Barry Davis for me - he just had a way of speaking which just all of a sudden you are somewhere completely different and he takes you there and he could be commentating on anything!"

Looking back at how it all started in Aprés Match, Cooper said: "It's almost like we've been doing it as a hobby which I think is one of the reasons it's probably withstood the test of time and why we've continued to enjoy it.

"It's bit like being in a band. I think you need breaks but when we get together - we really get together for the big events, the big tournaments and we're going to be doing a tour and we'll do live dates and all that"

Looking ahead to Russia 2018, he said: "It's obviously going to be different because Ireland aren't involved but England are, crucially!

"It's interesting in the past when Ireland have been and England have been involved - everyone is waiting for the sketch about England obviously because you can take the mickey out of Irish things but the English have a way of providing so much material - unwittingly!
