Former Dublin stalwart Paddy Christie believes people should remember where Dublin gaelic team have comer from.
The former Dublin full back says he remembers the days when Dublin minors were getting “destroyed” by Laois in the minor Championship. He recalled the meeting between the two counties from the mid 2000s.
Christie was speaking on this afternoon’s OTB Saturday Panel
“I went to see Laois around 2005/06 Leinster Championship in minor football down at Carlow. It will tell you where Laois were at the time; Laois destroyed Dublin. I remember going down and being devastated after.
He says it’s crucial for coaching staff to have the raw materials in place for the conveyor belt to be a success. Christie says that doesn’t even guarantee success.
“How was Mickey Whelan, or any of these fellas going to do anything when the raw materials are not there. A lot of success depends on having the raw materials, and it’s not a guarantee, by any means but you certainly need to have it there.
Christie praised Jim Gavin and his staff for the success of the underage set up. He also reminded people to remember the baron years Dublin team had to endure, before asserting themselves as the dominant force on the countries gaelic grounds.
“And you could see Laois, years after their success at senior level, building off their underage success. I suppose with Dublin now, ultimately that’s where they’ve come from. I’m sure Jim does a very good job, and we will never know because everything is kept very, very quiet. It’s obvious he does a very good job, and I don’t want to detract from that in any way but I think people should remember where the bad old days were with Dublin.”
