No problem with Michael Owen but Jason McAteer's still on the warpath!

As you may have seen at the weekend, Jason McAteer and Michael Owen had a mini disagreement!

The former Liverpool team-mates found themselves on opposite sides in the Star Sixes tournament for former players as Ireland took on England.

An off-the-ball incident saw Owen shove McAteer and the Irishman retaliate with a boot towards the ex-England striker's posterior.

That earned him a red card but is he in more forgiving form 24 hours on?

Kick

Well, there's no issue between himself and Owen as he explained to Joe Molloy and Kevin Kilbane.

"There's absolutely no problem with me and Michael Owen," he said.

"We didn't kiss and make-up but we had a conversation and had a laugh about it."

Either way, he was always planning to stand his ground.

"At the end of the day, if one of them kicks out at you, then you've got to stand your own, haven't you?" he said.

"You've got to protect yourself. You've got to ask the question: Why they did it and unfortunately in that moment, where it's intense in that situation - and I was breathing out my proverbial - it's very difficult to calm down very quickly.

"So it was a situation that escalated. Unfortunately, it was Michael Owen because he was probably one of them players that I would say would be slightly more protected or looked after and the referee made an absolutely atrocious call and sent me off and not him!

"I'm not saying I shouldn't have been sent off. I was a bit petulant - and I didn't kick him up the backside. I pushed him with my foot which was kind of like a loving, 'Off you go!' And Michael understood that. He didn't get hurt. He wasn't hurt by it. But the referee should have understood that."

McAteer added that Owen also should have followed him off the pitch as punishment. And he added (mostly jokingly) that he was tempted to "chin" Owen's mate who goaded him off the pitch after his red.
