Liverpool are a top side, but are in need of some fresh faces to compete over a whole season, according to Jonathan Liew.
The chief sports writer for The Independent joined Ger and Eoin over Skype this morning on OTB:AM, and discussed the need for Liverpool to add depth to their side.
Despite Jurgen Klopp's side's impressive 3-0 victory over Man City last week, Liew believes that the reason they can't produce that form consistently may be down to the fact that they're squad is stretched a bit thin over the course of a whole season, a stark contrast to that of Pep Guardiola's outfit.
"Liverpool's top level is up there with the best in Europe, but I suppose what we need to see is in the summer and next season they need to add a little meat to the bones".
"City are increasingly built to fight on three or four fronts. Even though their squad isn't huge, it's kind of well packed enough to be able to cope with the stress of three or four competitions".
Liew, fully aware of the financial limitations clubs face when compared to City, noted that it will be tough for Liverpool to compete with the level of spending of City, though noted the benefit of having a manager who prefers to work with smaller groups of players.
"Liverpool don't have those finances, we all know that, they had to essentially sell Coutinho in January to release the funds to be able to sign Nabby Keita in the summer and Van Dijk in January as well. Their net spend is like a fraction of what City's is".
"Klopp doesn't want a huge squad, he doesn't want 10, 12, 15 players strolling around the place if they're not really challenging for a first team place. So as well as the finances of it, the style of squad that Klopp likes to manage is also going to have an impact on that".
It's worth noting that while fans often call for sweeping changes with fresh faces arriving by the dozen and old ones cast aside like a used Djimi Traore, Liew referenced the last time Liverpool attempted to add a large number of players to the squad in an attempt to beef up the numbers for the Champions League.
"Obviously they're going to need to fill out the squad a little bit in the summer, but the danger is that it becomes something like what happened with Brendan Rodgers in 2014 where he basically bought six or seven players and totally disrupted the harmony of the squad, and it went downhill there for him".
