Mayo's dark arts are fine by me - Larry Finnerty

Former Mayo footballer Larry Finnerty is happy to see Mayo embrace the dark arts in their quest for All-Ireland Championship glory.

Mayo stayed in Allianz League Division 1 by the skin of their teeth, at the expense of  Donegal - yesterday's opponents. To Larry's mind, their ability to physically grind the game out is a bonus for the county.

"I think that was great. I'd be looking at that as a positive sign, having watched Dublin do it in the All-Ireland final last year - having watched them against Galway last week after they had got the lead score and the same thing happened again - Dublin seem to be able to get away with it no problem.

"All of a sudden, Mayo try it and try to kill the game. There doesn't seem to be any great issues when Dublin do it, all of a sudden Mayo are the bad guys. You've got to learn from the best, and Dublin seem to be absolutely brilliant at wrapping lads up in the last sections of the game. I thought Mayo were excellent in regard to what they did, to be honest with you.

"The game was there - they had got the point - so you have got to try and kill it. In fairness to the referee, I thought it was a good call - I felt that Donegal had been play-acting a little bit themselves. They themselves were killing the clock.

"If you're up there scrapping with the Dubs, it's about time that Mayo showed a little bit of that, particularly in the closing stages of a huge game.

"I say fair play to them yesterday."
