Louise Quinn reveals inspiring teacher's note

The end of this season has been a memorable one for Ireland's Louise Quinn.

The 28-year-old defender was part of the Arsenal side that won the FA Women's Super League for the first time since 2012.

She was back in Ireland today as part of the 20x20 campaign and chatted to our own Maire Treasa Ni Cheallaigh.

Quinn touched on both Arsenal's success and Ireland's upcoming Euro 2021 qualifying campaign that begins against Montenegro.

Miss Slattery's Note

But she also revealed an example of early encouragement from her school days.

"One good stand-out is when I was 7-years-old. My teacher Miss Slattery sent a note home to my parents," she said.

"Obviously, first of all they probably thought I was in trouble. But on the note, it said, 'No, you can't have homework off today'. But then the next line was, 'You're good at football and you're better than any of the boys'.

"And still now to this day, my Mam has kept that letter and it just shows how important it was to her and to my Dad. Hopefully, it was then something that really inspired me and pushed me on.

"I think Miss Slattery was definitely a hero and it's all these small messages and gestures, saying something that can stick with someone years later. That definitely stuck with me."

20×20 is about creating a cultural shift in our perception of girls and women in sport. By increasing visibility of women’s sport it will become a greater part of who we are and what we follow. The initiative seeks to change the subliminal bias in the Irish psyche that exists around girls and boys, or women and men, when it comes to sport.

The latest chapter of the 20x20 campaign focuses on Role Models. The Hero Your Hero film highlights the part role models play in getting girls & women into sport. Hero Your Hero saying who got you into sport & why you’re thanking them using #CantSeeCantBe. Celebrate the role models of today so we can be the role models of tomorrow.
