John Giles' Turkish memories: "Eamon Dunphy played in the match and I think somebody gave him a kick coming off"

John Giles joined Off the Ball on Thursday to look ahead to Ireland's friendly match against Turkey.

The former Leeds star recalled the hostile environment he encountered when he travelled to the country back in the 1970s.

"I played in Turkey in the bad old days when we had a selection committee - a total joke," he told Nathan. "We played in Ankara - Ankara wasn't the nicest of places. The pitch was a quagmire - we got beaten on the day.

"And, it was funny in Ankara, even during the day there was thousands of people wandering around - about 15 thousand came to see us training - that's how bad it was, totally hostile.

"Eamon Dunphy played in the match and I think somebody gave him a kick coming off. We were beaten as well.

"And it was the bad old days when he selectors picked the team. I remember it was around February time and in those days you didn't have to be automatically released.

"Don Revie said "I don't want you going there" and I said I'd like to go to Turkey and I thought it'd be nice and sunny, I'd get a bit of a break from the winter in England and went over - nightmare! Snow, freezing cold, the pitch was a quagmire, we got beat and they were totally hostile - that was my first experience."
