John Giles surveys the increasingly "doubtful situation" at Manchester United

As the Premier League returns, Leeds and Ireland legend John Giles was back with us as always on a Thursday.

So we got his thoughts on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the leading clubs after a shortened summer window off the back of a World Cup and a Transfer Deadline Day that has been radically brought forward to today.

The situation at Manchester United is intriguing with manager Jose Mourinho clearly frustrated by a quiet summer in the transfer window. The relationship between Paul Pogba and Mourinho has also caught John's eye.

"There's a lot of talk now about Pogba wanting to move, to go to Barcelona and if that comes about, then I'd say Mourinho's stay at Manchester United would be in doubt," he said, adding that Pogba playing well for France en route to winning the World Cup puts more pressure on the Man United manager.

John also added that he wouldn't be surprised if Mourinho and the United hierarchy "fell out totally" as the season unfolds if his frustrations boils over.

"I'd say it's a doubtful situation there," he said in regards to whether Mourinho will see out the season.

John also tipped Liverpool to be far more likely to push Manchester City closer than United, praising their summer business.

"They'll be very, very dangerous as far as Manchester City are concerned," he said.

John also discussed Chelsea's concerns as well as Man City.
