John Giles' take on Delaney and the FAI board

John Giles feels an overhaul of the FAI board is an "option" to be considered.

An FAI delegation including former CEO John Delaney went before the Oireachtas Committee on Wednesday to answer questions about governance and other matters.

Irish football's governing body has been under mounting scrutiny and criticism. On last night's Off The Ball, committee chair Fergus O'Dowd called on the board and Delaney to resign.

And Ireland and Leeds United legend John Giles feels it was a "terrible" week for the game here.

"One of the worst weeks we ever had," he told Nathan as he joined us always on a Thursday.

"I've never known a situation like this where the soccer community was in the position that we were in."

Option

John also touched on the question marks over Delaney and the board and whether they should resign.

"I think it's something to be considered. It sounds a bit drastic initially," he said.

"I think a lot of thought should go into where it goes and where it goes from here. But that certainly would be an option along the way.

"There are big decisions to be made, there's no doubt about that. In my opinion anyway, it was a bad time for Irish football."

John also gave his view on John Delaney's move from CEO to executive vice president of the FAI.

"I think it's not a bad move for the Association because it's a change in the Association," he said.

"I think John Delaney would be at the table in Europe which is very important to us. We have to have some representation in that particular area. Because for example, we've got four games coming up in the Euros that we have. There's a possibility that we'll have the World Cup with England and Scotland and Wales, and it's very, very important that we have representation at the table in UEFA."
