John Giles believes the policy of appointing Mick McCarthy as Ireland manager until 2020 to be then succeeded by Stephen Kenny is a good idea.
The Ireland and Leeds legend was chatting to ex-Boys in Green midfielder Keith Andrews and backed the FAI succession plan.
"I think it was a very good policy. I think Stephen deserves the shot at it. I think Mick does as well and I think it's ideal," he said.
"The main thing was that Mick agreed to this policy and so did Kenny apparently. Kenny had a very, very good time at Dundalk and deserves a shot at it and he might have been criticised for not having international experience if he had taken the job now.
"But he's been given 18 months to two years to take the Under-21s, to be with the international team and to learn about international football so I think that policy has been very, very good."
He also predicted that McCarthy will fare well as manager for the next campaign and he also feels Robbie Keane's inclusion as one of the assistants alongside Big Mick's trusted lieutenant Terry Connor is a positive.
"There's no reason why he can't teach and coach the strikers. I mean, he's the best striker we ever had," he said.
"We have special coaching for goalkeepers. Why not for forwards? And for midfield players at times? I think it's a good appointment and Mick made the point himself that [Keane] is a young fella. He can get on with the younger players in the squad now and he'd be a hero of there's anyway."
