With only one round of victories in the way of finally having an all Irish affair at a Champions Cup, there will be plenty of talk this week about the possibility of Leinster and Munster facing off on the most prestigious stage of European club rugby.
The Irish Independent's rugby correspondent, Ruadhri O'Connor, joined Ger Gilroy and Dan McDonnell on this morning's OTB:AM to talk about this weekend's upcoming fixtures, and whether an all Irish final would be even better than the Grand Slam, a notion O'Connor didn't agree with.
"I don't know why we have to say one's greater than the other".
"If it was a 6 Nations success, fair enough. I think the Grand Slam stands alone, a Grand Slam is up there with the World Cup in terms of achievement".
O'Connor also made the point that while many are hailing the success of Leinster and Munster, the other Irish provinces have been far from impressive, and we shouldn't forget that even if Leinster and Munster eventually square off for a European title.
"Ulster and Connacht have had really poor seasons, so you couldn't say Irish rugby is in a really healthy place, but for those two provinces who drive the whole thing really, to get to a final would be an incredible achievement".
O'Connor praised both provinces for their form and consistency this season, though noted the poor showings from the English sides in this season Champions Cup, which has to be taken into account when discussing the achievements of the Irish sides
"The English clubs have had a really poor year, so there's that. There are mitigating factors, they've exploited that, but for Munster to go away and win a semi-final and Leinster to do what they've done in terms of being consistent all season, it's a massive testament to that"
"I don't think it tips the Grand Slam, but it's up there, and it would just make this the greatest season in Irish rugby history".
