"I just misjudged how firm the greens were and they got away from me" - Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy is taking the positives from his play so far at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open as he prepares for the third major of the year at Carnoustie later this month.

The Northern Irishman is one-under for his three rounds at Ballyliffin and despite struggling with the putter - he's focusing on the strengths of his game.

"I played ok - tee to green has been pretty good," he told Off the Ball's Will O'Callaghan. "I could take my 'tee to green' game straight to The Open in a couple of weeks time and be happy where that is. It's just a matter of being a little more efficient and taking my opportunities when I give myself them.

"Even today, I missed a couple of greens that I felt I hit good chip shots - I just misjudged how firm the greens were and they got away from me so just a little more efficient with my scoring and I'd be happy enough with that.

Looking ahead to the challenge at The Open in Scotland, where he is looking to win his first major in four years, he said: "You have to hit the ball in play at Carnoustie - you have to be able to play off those fairways and not be playing out of the rough. If I can do that for the most part and just tidy up around the greens - I should be right where I need to be."
