Sometimes in life, you realise you are a little different. Even top-level camogie players like Mags D'Arcy, who told us about a memorable celebration from her sporting days at school...
Mags joined Ger & Eoin in studio for this morning's OTB:AM, and discussion turned to the benefits of mixed sex sports.
"I would have played with the boys up until under-11s or under-12s, and I probably only recognised I was different when it was May 1999. Ryan Giggs took off his shirt celebrating the goal in the FA Cup Semi Final replay, and I wanted to emulate that. So I went out to the schoolyard the following week, and I was like 'Right - this is my moment to shine!'
"I went down the wing, cut on in, with a nice slide pass into the bottom of the net. I was the only girl on the team, and went to take the shirt off and then realised that this wasn't right, quite possibly - this wasn't good! I was playing with the men's hurling team at the time and then confirmation came and then I realised that we must go our separate ways now!"
"But I learned a lot from playing with men, and that's where a lot of my skill development came on when I was younger."
After the tricky coalescence between boys and girls in teenage years, Mags still feels that the co-existence of men's and women's sports encourages mutual learning.
"[Success] came from open thinking. We would share pitches regularly with the guys, shared dressing rooms nearly! It is a very open-doors policy, and that comes from the top down with our chairperson."
