How Fernando Hierro will be judged against Iran

Former world champions Spain are under pressure to get their World Cup campaign up and running when they face Iran on Wednesday night.

La Roja’s 3-3 draw with Portugal in their opening group fixture has left Fernando Hierro’s side in third place ahead of kick-off and there is little room for slip ups.

Spanish based journalist Andy West believes Hierro will be judged by his ability to change the change the game with substitutions if Iran pose a considerable obstacle.

“I think this is a team that more or less runs itself in terms of tactical nous,” West told Off The Ball.

“They’ve got so many experienced players right throughout the team - from [Sergio] Ramos and [Gerard] Pique managing things at the back.

“[Sergio] Busquets in front of the back four, [Andres] Iniesta, David Silva. They’ve got so much experience and tactical knowledge as well.

“I think the players are capable of making the in-game adjustments they need to but the substitutions are the big one. If Diego Costa isn’t working, how long does he wait before he brings on Iago Aspas who’s the more technical player.

“Does he look to change the shape and go two up front maybe? These are things that will be tested later on but I don’t think we should underestimate Iran.

“They have a fantastic record defensively. They went 21 months without conceding a competitive goal. Obviously they have a very experienced manager in Carlos Quieroz who knows Spain inside out.

“I don’t think it’s going to be easy for Spain but it’s going to be frustrating for them. They might have to be very patient.”
