Have skill-sets diminished in the GAA due to the focus on Strength and Conditioning?

Declan Lynch and Cliona Foley joined Off the Ball for the Sunday Paper Review this week to discuss the week's big talking points.

A piece by Joe Brolly caught the eye with Foley saying: "He's got a beautiful turn of phrase and he also seems to have an encyclopedic memory of instances and matches and stuff that happened in his dad's day so it's actually a really nice piece.

"Now, the bone of contention is - and Brolly always has a little stinger at the end - is that he's giving out about that there's so much science in the game now and overly manned by professionals trying to coach the game and the headline is 'Scientific gobbledigook is filling the gap where practicing skills used to be' and that angle comes up in a few articles this week.

"Colm O'Rourke is talking about it...because remember the free-taking shoot-out last weekend in the football match where there was only three scored out of ten and actually, in the Walsh Cup yesterday, with Wexford that came down to free-taking from the 65 and it's very well covered today - Wexford beat Kilkenny last night 3-2.

"But even Jamsie O'Connor in the Indo today is being nostalgic about this new order and the problems it's going to cause for the GAA - it's an early preview into the league starting next week but he's just talking about how you've now condensed the league into such a short period of time and he's sceptical as well about this notion about people being able to play the club game's in April."
