George Best and his mini Phil Lynott Manchester connection

Much has been written George Best and his time at Manchester United.

But one area that hasn't been explored as much are the places he lived and spent his time in.

Well, authors Paul Collier, who knew Best personally, and Stuart Bolton have plugged that niche.

They have released a book called Trailing George Best in which the homes and workplaces the former winger became associated with become the star of the show.

They joined me on Team 33 this week to talk through Best's career via those buildings that marked his life in Manchester.

You can listen to the full podcast here.

George Best and his mini Phil Lynott Manchester connection

One had a small connection to Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott.

"Although, he was known about town, he liked - not to be anonymous because that was impossible - but he would go to bars where he wouldn't be pestered so much," said Bolton.

The aforementioned place was called Phyllis' within the Clifton Grange Hotel.

Philomena

"It was named after Philomena Lynott, Phil Lynott's mother," Bolton continued.

"Apparently it was downstairs, there were no windows, so people weren't aware what time of the day it was. They'd find themselves there until 6 or 7 o'clock in the morning. It's not like anything hellraising going on. It was just a nice place where people went and felt comfortable in each other's company."

In the book itself, it's explained that Lynott's mother Philomena ran the Clifton Grange Hotel at that time. And her son used to stage his homecoming parties there whenever he visited her in Manchester.

Other stories we discuss in the chat include how Mrs Mary Fullaway's dog (she was his landlady in the digs he surprisingly lived in for at least a decade almost throughout his entire United career) came in handy for replying to fan mail. And we also touch on his part-time jobs outside of football in Manchester.

Also on this week's show, Joe Coffey and Jonathan Higgins joined me to discuss Chelsea's ennui. And Jonathan also stood up for his beloved Liverpool after some officiating calls during the Crystal Palace win.
