"An idea that's been floating around for a while" | Could David Moyes succeed Marco Silva at Everton?

When Everton announced their decision to part ways with Marco Silva, it didn't come as a surprise.

The Toffees are in the relegation zone after Wednesday night's Merseyside derby defeat.

But what's next for the club as they look to move on from the Marco Silva era?

Football writer John Brewin joined us on the Football Show and touched on ex-Everton boss David Moyes.

The former long-time Toffees manager is a name that is being linked with a return.

"It's an idea that's been floating around for a while," he said.

"His closeness to Kenwright is certainly a factor. One of the problems Everton have is that they don't actually really know what they want.

"They appointed Ronald Koeman in about 2016 and that appeared to be the plan then. Since then, they've been scrabbling around.

"To reset themselves to David Moyes... I mean what would we suggest is David Moyes' best period as a manager since leaving Everton?"

Bemused

But Brewin did point out that Moyes did to a reasonable job in an interim role at West Ham in a vaguely similar position in the Premier League table.

"But I think back to the rather morose, grey figure that we saw at Sunderland and he was unable to lift that club. The way that Moyes is and the way that Moyes was in 2002 is a very different person."

He also added that Moyes would be returning to a very different internal landscape than the one he left in 2013.

Everton's travails have inevitably put scrutiny over the squad building efforts that director of football Marcel Brands has seemingly led. However, Brewin feels the club's issues could well be down to key figures "pulling in different directions".

"I think the question is how much power does Marcel Brands actually have?" he said.

"The feeling I get from Everton is there are so many parties pulling in different directions. Actually, I think the appointment of this successor will probably prove that even further.

"Marcel Brands seems to have been hugely ineffectual as a director of football - as directors of football often appear to be. It's a system that obviously works on the continent and hasn't really taken off so much over here.

"I think [owner Farhad] Moshiri is a guy who looks to pull the strings. And then you've got the manager. One thing you would say about Marco Silva, apart from the way that his team played, he did seem a little bemused by the players he had to work with."
