David Brady: “Eventually they are going to have to start shaving and grow old.”

Former Mayo footballer David Brady says it’s time for Roscommon to mature as a team.

He says the Tribesmen’s defensive system has not been a solid as they would have wanted it to be. Brady believes they have conceded sloppy fouls in key areas.

Brady joined OTB on Wednesday evening to discuss the Connacht final between the neighbouring counties.

“Galway know how to play out and out football. I think they’ve adapted to it, and you can’t be poor at the back. The one thing I will say: ‘even though Galway have a defensive system, I thought they’ve been very lax, and numerous occasions they have been giving away silly fouls, even during the Mayo game. Their system is right but I don’t think their physicality in the tackle is right, and that’s something with games, you can get it right.‘

Brady says Roscommon and Galway managers Kevin McStay and Kevin Walsh deserve the credit for their team’s progression.

“I think the credit has to go to the likes of Kevin Walsh and Kevin McStay. They are two very astute, conniving managers but they are honest.”

The former Mayo man says McStay’s cannot keep brandishing his players’ as young when they have been in the team for four to five years. He believes experience must match the progression.

“They’ve been calling them young players for the last four or five years. Eventually they are going to have to start shaving and grow old.”
