Danny Hughes, Enda McGinley and Anthony Moyles joined Dave McIntyre on Off the Ball for this week's Saturday Panel ahead of a big weekend of GAA action.
Mayo are already on the back foot after losing their Connacht Championship opener to Galway by 1-12 to 0-12 but Hughes isn't too concerned and expects to see them challenge later in the season.
However, Hughes doesn't think Mayo fans should be too worried heading into the qualifiers, saying: "I wouldn't be as worried as the rest of the country - I think Mayo get written off every year for how many years now and they've always come back and they've always gone this back road.
"Galway have beaten them but Galway's recent history against Mayo has been quite good. They haven't won the Connacht title for a couple of years and I wouldn't be that worried.
"Mayo tend to get better as the year goes on, as games go on. They certainly don't blast any teams out of the water going through the back door but I think when they're coing closer to Croke Park - Mayo seem to get a wee bit better.
"They have been a kick of the ball away the last two years - they have been so unlucky. These players: Aidan O'Sé, Parsons, Lee Keegan (still to come back in) - Andy Moran, the O'Connors - they don't become bad players overnight.
"They had a decent league campaign. Yes, they were beat by Galway but they were very well set up and very well drilled and were expecting to beat Mayo - so, am I worried about Mayo? Probably not as much as other people because I think that the back-door route will probably suit Mayo in the long run and they're going to meet a lot of weak teams," he added.
