Former boxer Andy Lee revealed his top five boxing movies on OTB AM.
Lee ranked ‘Cinderella Man’ at number five, adding “It’s a true story about a man’s struggle and his perseverance, gets a shot out of the blue and takes it,” about the film, which was released in 2005.
Next up at number four, ‘Somebody Up There Likes Me’ which Lee admits is “a personal favourite. “Just the performance of Paul Newman, just the scenes of New York, Lower East Side, it’s the Rocky Graziano story.”
In the middle at three is On the Waterfront. Lee reveals that in acting classes, they actually watched a scene from the movie and Marlon Brando’s character related to Lee. “He’s just a young New York kind of a guy and I’ve met those guys so many times.”
Just missing the top spot is Journeyman. Lee actually was involved with the film but was still affected when he saw it. “I went to see this film after I retired, and when I left i was so happy I was retired because I couldn’t imagine being in my position as an ageing boxer and having watched this film”.
And in first place, Lee puts Raging Bull. His reason is simple. “Without boxing this is a great film, this is one of the great films of all time.”
