Alan Quinlan: "As a unit, the eight forwards didn't impose themselves"

Former Ireland international Alan Quinlan joined Monday's OTB AM to dissect Ireland's loss against Australia in Brisbane at the weekend.

Ireland fielded a weakened side in the opening test of the series and the result ended Joe Schmidt's side's 12 match winning run.

Joey Carbery's performance came under scrutiny since he replaced Johnny Sexton in the starting line-up but he left the field with Ireland leading 9-8 and Quinlan thinks his forwards didn't give him a good enough platform to perform on the night.

"He didn't miss any tackles or people didn't run out over him - I thought he was solid - that's the word that's being bandied about," he told Ger.

"I think ultimately it's up front. As a unit, the eight forwards didn't impose themselves on the Australians so a lot of the ball he was getting - he was under massive pressure.

"He got hit late by Hooper at one stage when he passed the ball so they were trying to rough him up.

"So, I thought he coped very well. Andy Dunne was talking there about maybe being a little bit deeper but it's tricky when you're in a game like that. If Sexton starts the game - they're maybe targeting him as well so I think he did well overall.

"Ideally, his forwards would have been a bit more dominant and he could have expressed himself a little bit better," he added.
