Tributes to 'all-time Waterford great' Michael 'Brick' Walsh as retirement announcement expected

Michael 'Brick' Walsh has been described as "one of the all-time Waterford greats" as he is expected to bow out of inter-county hurling.

The retirement of the 36-year-old has not been confirmed yet but was reported in the Irish Examiner. The four-time All-Star has claimed three Munster titles for his county since he joined the senior panel in 2019. With his club Stradbally, he has claimed 10 county championship medals and has helped propel the team to be the joint most decorated club in Waterford.

Speaking to WLR in Waterford, Tony Browne said he's "one of the best players I ever played with. A warrior who leads by doing rather than saying.

"You knew you had someone you could trust when going into battle with him, who put you before him and has cemented his name as one of all-time Waterford greats."

While, former Deise manager Derek McGrath who led the county to the All-Ireland hurling final in 2017 has been quoted as saying, “Obviously an incredible athlete, an incredible warrior, a spirit if you like.

"Something that’s intangible almost to people, what he brings to it. He brought energy, he brought a dynamic; I think you have to see it first hand.

"He also brought a crucial ingredient, he brought the whole idea of perseverance. Such a warrior but he’s such a really, really good person as well in terms of how he lives his life. ”

While, former manager and current Wexford boss Davy Fitgerald also weighed in saying, "We managed to get to an All-Ireland and Brick was a big part of that but from then on we decided to maybe give Brick a go at center-back, to me it was a great decision.

"You have a player with vision, a player with heart, he had the whole package to be honest with you; he was relentless, he’s a winner. I was delighted to manage someone like Brick."
