Waterford's Tony Browne on how he achieved longevity

Listen to the full interview above via the podcast

One fact really helps to gauge the incredible longevity of Tony Browne.

The Waterford legend has spent more than half of his life as part of the Waterford senior hurling setup.

But after 23 years in the shirt of the Deise, the wing back called it a day last week at the age of 40.

Amid tributes from the likes of Clare manager Davy Fitzgerald, Browne joined us on the show tonight to look back on his very long career at the top.

It might be way back in 1991 when most of our Off The Ball team were in varying stages of childhood, but Browne told us he could remember his hurling league debut.

"I remember that spin up to Galway and being fairly nervous about taking the field against fairly tough men at the time. It was a rude awakening into the start of a career. But it was great," said Browne of his feelings 23 years ago, discussing how the county's senior setup changed.

But this year he felt he needed a permanent change.

"I didn't do anything differently to what I'd done the last five years. I've always left it until February and took every week as it came and see how the body felt. I was lucky enough through my mid-30s and late 30s that I had understanding people around me and managers that gave me that opportunity. Ultimately it was the right time for me [to retire] and it was the right time for this particular team," he revealed.

Browne also gave us an unparalled insight into his approach and training regime as he managed his body into his 30s which you can listen to via the podcast.
