Tom English on Scottish "pantomime response" to Jamie Heaslip satisfaction

In general, the reaction from those of an Ireland persuasion has been very positive after the draw for the 2019 Rugby World Cup pool stages.

Avoiding some of the biggest hitters, Ireland will take on Scotland and Japan, which the least daunting pool Joe Schmidt's side could have found themselves in. Certainly it's a far cry from the "Group of Death" featuring England, France and Argentina.

Certainly, Ireland back row Jamie Heaslip echoed the sentiments and relief of many by stating that he was "happy" with the draw.

And that elation from an Irish player did not go down well in Scotland, at least on social media as BBC Scotland chief sports writer Tom English noted.

"It's a bit of a pantomime response now to be honest. It's a bit of a Twitter response," he said.

"I think Jamie Heaslip was apparently punching the air on the draw. They've taken it as a slight put down of Scotland."

English also discussed the perception those of a Scotland persuasion feel others have had of their team, touching on the reaction to Ireland's defeat to the Scots at Murrayfield in the 2017 Six Nations.

"There is a narrative here, being serious, that a lot of people in Scotland - certainly Vern Cotter thought that when he was in the job and his attack coach Jason O'Halloran thought it - that after Scotland had beaten Ireland, that Ireland didn't give Scotland due credit, that Ireland seemed to be putting the win down to the fact that Ireland blew it and Scotland should never have won," said English.

"That has rankled and hasn't really come out in public but privately some of the players say Ireland never gave Scotland any credit for that win, so maybe that's where it's coming from there amongst the supporters."
