Tipperary GAA mourns the passing of hurling legend Theo English

Tributes have been paid to Tipperary hurling legend Theo English who has died, aged 90.

English, who was named on the Tipperary team of the century, passed away at South Tipperary General Hospital.

The former midfielder began his inter-county career as a dual player and made his senior hurling debut during the 1953/54 National League season.

English won five senior All-Ireland hurling titles with Tipperary in 1958, 1961, 1962, 1964 while he also won seven Munster medals and eight in the National Hurling League.

As well as his senior hurling titles, he won a Munster junior football title and was a winner in four South Tipperary Championships with his club, Marfield.

The Tipperary County board announced the news in short statement on Twitter on Sunday.

"It was with deep sadness that we learned this morning of the passing of former Marlfield and Tipperary great Theo English," the statement read.

"Tipperary GAA extends our sincere sympathies to Theo’s wife Maureen and his family at this very sad time. May he Rest In Peace."

English helped his native county achieve more success after he stopped playing.

He was part of the backroom team when the Premier County won the 1971 All-Ireland senior hurling title.

Babs Keating had English as one of his selectors for the All-Ireland wins in 1989 and 1991.
