Tiger Woods says he's been approached about proposed Premier Golf League

Tiger Woods has admitted to being approached by the organisers of a proposed breakaway Premier Golf League.

In January the World Golf Group unveiled plans for a new 18-event global tour with a $240-million (€220m) total prize fund.

Under their proposals, the Premier Golf League would begin in January 2022 and have an eight-month season with ten US-based events. They're seeking to recruit 48 top players for their endeavour.

World Golf Group have said they're keen to work with both the European Tour and the PGA Tour, but both bodies have dismissed the idea.

One man who does seem open to it is Tiger Woods, "Have I been personally approached? Yes", was his response when speaking ahead of this week's Genesis Open at the Riviera Country Club.

The 15-time Major-winner added, "My team's been aware of it and we've delved into the details of it trying to figure it all out just like everyone else.

"We've been down this road before with World Golf Championships and other events being started or other tours who want to evolve and start.

"There's a lot of information that we're still looking at, and whether it's a reality or not. Just like everyone else we're looking into it."

Asked why the persistence in adding more big competitions to the calendar, Woods replied, "I think that just like all events, you're trying to get the top players to play more collectively.

"It's one of the reasons we instituted the World Golf Championships because we were only getting together five times a year - the four Majors and the Players' [Championship] - and you want to showcase the top players on more than just those occasions.

"We came up with the World Golf Championships and we're meeting more often, and so this is a natural evolution where things like this are going to happen, but ideas like this are going to happen going forward."
