Mayo manager Stephen Rochford: "We're being penalised for our own mistakes"

Mayo manager Stephen Rochford feels his team are getting "penalised for their own mistakes" after an Allianz Football League loss to Cavan.

The Connacht side are not clear of relegation worries after the loss to the Ulster county and speaking to Newstalk Sport's Oisin Langan after the game, Rochford feels the setbacks and errors are self-inflicted.

"The reality is that we put ourselves in a good position in the first half and again we're being penalised for our own mistakes and we have to suck it up and get ourselves ready now for next week," he said.

Rochford also gave his take about the way in which Cavan seemed to profit from attacks through the middle.

"That's the nature of it when you play with many bodies back the field. When they break out, that's where they run so you can either decide to play the same game or look to try and turn that ball up a bit further up the field and that's what we were trying to do," he said.

"But the [Cavan] goal didn't come from that. A couple of the frees that they got in the first half didn't come from them scenarios and they're the things that we'll aim to look at and work on."

Rochford has also given opportunities to emerging talent in the league and that of course would have an impact on results.

"You can't expect a guy that's maybe playing his first or fourth or fifth National League game or senior high quality game to have the same levels of experience as somebody who's played 50 games," he said.

Mayo will now look to ensure top flight survival in their final two Division One fixtures against Tyrone in Omagh and then against Donegal in Castlebar.
