Spurs set to appoint Nuno Espirito Santo as manager

Tottenham Hotspur are finalising a deal to appoint former Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo as manager, according to reports.

The north London club are holding face-to-face talks with Santo today after agreeing on a deal in principle with the Portuguese coach who left Wolverhampton Wanderers in May.

The new Spurs Director of Football, Fabio Paratici, is expected to lead the talks in London, despite not officially starting his position until Thursday after leaving Juventus in May.

Santo spent four successful seasons at Wolves, during which he led them out of the Championship and to a Europa League quarter-final.

According to The Athletic, Tottenham are confident of agreeing to terms with Santo, who became Tottenham's primary target after an executive meeting on Tuesday.

Despite the club's confidence, Spurs fans will only be satisfied the saga is completed when an official announcement is made. The north London club have had a tumultuous time replacing Jose Mourinho, with chairman Daniel Levy holding talks with Antonio Conte, Hansi Flick, Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso.

Levy also held talks with former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, who is currently employed by PSG.

Santo was initially not a contender for the position and was linked with the vacant Crystal Palace job, but became Tottenham's top target as they exhausted numerous options.

Spurs were within touching distance of appointing the man that Mourinho replaced at Roma, Paulo Fonseca; however, talks collapsed, leading them to turn to Gennaro Gattuso. The club then u-turned on Gattuso after Spurs fans made their opposition to his appointment known.

In a letter to Tottenham fans at the culmination of the season, chairman Daniel Levy wrote that the board had “lost sight of some key priorities and what’s truly in our DNA”.

He added: “We are acutely aware of the need to select someone whose values reflect those of our great club and return to playing football with the style for which we are known — free-flowing, attacking and entertaining — while continuing to embrace our desire to see young players flourish from our academy alongside experienced talent.”
