Spanish club rocked by outbreak of COVID-19 cases

CF Fuenlabrada's playoff hopes are in jeopardy as the club revealed there are 28 positive cases of coronavirus within the club.

Twelve of the cases are new, and it has led to the hospitalisation of an unnamed player. Fuenlabrada confirmed the player is in a stable condition in hospital.

"We want to express our deep pain and concern about the results of the last PCR tests carried out that show a total of 28 positives in CF Fuenlabrada," the club statement read.

"There are a total of 12 new cases. Four of the new cases are in Madrid and they had no contact since the match against Elche on July 17. The other eight new cases have been negative since Saturday the 18th and, after eight days and despite being isolated in their rooms for the last six days, today the results have been positive."

"In addition, among the 12 new cases, there were two people with antibodies having already passed the disease and, however, they have tested positive in this last test."

The Segunda division side were due to play their final game of the season against Deportivo de La Coruna on Monday evening. The game was postponed when some Fuenlabrada players and staff tested positive before the game went ahead.

The decision to postpone the game has thrown the relegation battle into chaos.

Deportivo's relegation was sealed despite the fact they did not kick a ball, as other key games involving fellow strugglers went ahead.

Their relegation was a depressing sight for a club who last won the Primera Liga in 2000.

It is unclear when the Segunda division playoffs will take place. They cannot go ahead until the rescheduled game is played, and as of the time of writing that is yet to be confirmed.

The news emerged as Spain continues to battle against the coronavirus. Cases had begun to rise after the country reemerged from lockdown, many of which have occurred in Catalonia.

The rising numbers of positive cases caused Spain's deputy chief of health emergencies, Maria Jose Sierra to state that "it could already be a second wave."
