Solskjaer set for new contract at United as club prepares for transfers

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be given a new deal at Manchester United, despite ending up empty-handed in the hunt for trophies this season.

The club will also back Solskjaer in the transfer market this summer, according to the Telegraph.

Renewed questions have emerged in football media regarding the managerial acumen of Solskjaer, who saw his Red Devils beaten on penalties by Villarreal in the Europa League Final.

The 1999 Champions League final hero took over the club in a caretaker capacity in December 2018, before being made permanent in March 2019. He has yet to win silverware as the club's boss.

Outgoing executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward will support the retention of Solskjaer, who has one season left on his current contract.

United finished second, 12 points behind neighbours Manchester City in the Premier League season just gone, and the unpopular owners, the Glazer family, are set to authorise spending on a striker, a defender, a wide forward and a midfielder in the close season.

Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho is seen as the top transfer target for United, who have also been linked with Aston Villa playmaker Jack Grealish and Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane.

Solskjaer also has to make a decision around his goalkeepers, with David de Gea and Dean Henderson vying for the number one jersey. De Gea failed to save any penalties in the shoot-out against Villarreal.

Another player who has yet to commit his long term future to the club is French World Cup winner Paul Pogba.

Woodward is set to remain at the club until the end of the year, with co-chairman Joel Glazer to hold a first 'public' meeting with fans via a video link next week.

Irish legend and former Manchester United player John Giles told OTB Sports he isn't convinced by the Norwegian, who he doesn't see as a ' real leader' in the role of United manager.
