Zlatan Ibrahimovic could be facing an uncertain future with Manchester United amid rumours that he has suffered a serious knee injury.
The Swedish striker landed awkwardly in an aerial challenge against Anderlecht, in their Europa League quarter-final second leg clash on Thursday night.
His knee buckled upon landing in the Anderlecht penalty area and he immediately collapsed in pain. He limped off the pitch and was assessed by United medical staff on Friday.
It was initially reported that the 35-year-old could be ruled out for the rest of the season with the injury, but now it appears that his future with the Premier League club could be in doubt, as his injury status becomes clearer.
The Telegraph reports that Ibrahimovic may have torn his anterior and posterior cruciate ligament, an injury which requires a recovery time of between six and nine months.
Ibrahimovic joined United on a free transfer last year, and his current deal runs out at the end of this season. He has started negotiations with the club about a contract extension, but has yet to sign anything.
With 28 goals, Ibrahimovic is United's leading scorer this season. But given his age and a lack of any formal guarantee concerning his future at Old Trafford, his knee injury could signal the end of his time with the club.
Marcos Rojo also suffered a knee injury in the Thursday night fixture, which adds to United's worrying injury list which already features Juan Mata, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones.
