"You've got to leave him out at some point" - Pat Nevin on the Wayne Rooney situation

Pat Nevin feels that there are signs of all not being well at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho and feels the manager needs to address the Wayne Rooney issue.

The ex-Chelsea and Everton winger joined Off The Ball to discuss the early issues confronting the manager after a run of three defeats in a row in league and Europe.

One example is the way Mourinho singled out left-back Luke Shaw for criticism after the 3-1 defeat to Watford on Sunday when he was far from the only player culpable.

"There's definitely something - more than one thing - not right I'd suggest at Man United," said Pat, who also feels some of the better results from earlier in the season would "paper over the cracks".

"Shaw is an odd one, for me, to go for in the team. Watching that game again and there were so many problems. They just don't look like a group. They look like a lot of individuals out there."

Pat noted that Paul Pogba, Rooney and Marouane Fellaini didn't seem to gel well in midfield against Watford, especially defensively.

One answer is dropping the out-of-form Rooney and Pat feels that "you've got to leave him out at some point" in a bid to see what the problems are in the team.

"Have a look at Wayne Rooney every time that Manchester United lose a goal and look at what he's doing - and he's not directly involved in it. You tend to find he's 30 yards away and he's walking," said Pat, before highlighting some of the goals conceded against Watford as examples.
