Yaya Toure remains part of Pep project as he signs new Man City deal

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure will remain part of the Pep Guardiola project in the short term after he signed a new one year contract.

It marks a remarkable turnaround in his status under City manager Pep Guardiola, who sold him to the English club in the first place in 2010 after they had worked together and won a host of trophies in the 2008-09 season.

Toure had been expected to leave City once the new manager took charge last summer.

He was frozen out of the first team in August after his agent Dimitri Seluk publicly criticised the City boss.

But by November the 34 year old was back in the fold, going on to make 30 further appearances this season.

"I’m delighted. I told myself the journey at City is not done and when I received a call from Txiki and talked to the manager I was very delighted," he told Manchester City's official website.

"When I was first coming here [in 2010] I was trying to be part of a new story, of something special at this club. I am very lucky now to be part of a great club with great players around me who are helping me to achieve my targets.

"Of course I want to win trophies, that is very important to me. I want to enjoy it at this age still and remaining here is a massive, massive thing. It is a great club, going in the right direction with new players who are coming in. Our mentality is always to win week in, week out and I’m delighted with the fans as well."
