Hirving Lozano scored the only goal of the game in the second half to seal a memorable victory in Moscow against the holders.
Fellow World Cup favourites Brazil also dropped points as they drew 1-1 against Switzerland in Group E.
Philippe Coutinho gave Brazil the lead before Steven Zuber equalised for the Swiss in the opening minutes of the second half.
Elsewhere, Serbia beat Costa Rica 1-0 thanks to Aleksandar Kolarov’s pin point free-kick.
