Woodward steps down from UEFA as Manchester United leave ECA

Manchester United have stepped down from the European Club Association (ECA), while Ed Woodward has stepped down from his roles with UEFA, according to reports on Monday morning.

The news comes as Manchester United are one of the 'Big Six' teams set to join the proposed European Super League, which also includes three each from Spain and Italy to form a breakaway self-titled Super League of 20 teams, to begin "as soon as possible".

Woodward was appointed onto UEFA's Professional Football Strategy Council as an ECA representative in September 2017.

He was also involved as part of the ECA in the discussions over the revamping of the Champions League from 2024, with the expansion of the tournament to 36 teams.

The Manchester United Supporters' Trust have come out in strong opposition to the club's Super League involvement in a statement on Sunday night.

"These proposals are completely unacceptable and will shock Manchester United fans, as well as those of many other clubs," the statement said.

"A 'Super League' based on a closed shop of self-selected wealthy clubs goes against everything football, and Manchester United, should stand for.

"To bring forward these proposals without any fan consultation, and in the midst of a global pandemic when people should be pulling together not serving their own selfish interests, just adds insult to injury."

United are one of the co-founders of the new league, which also sees their co-chairperson Joel Glazer announced as vice-chairman of the Super League.

“By bringing together the world’s greatest clubs and players to play each other throughout the season," Glazer said in a statement, adding, "the Super League will open a new chapter for European football, ensuring world-class competition and facilities, and increased financial support for the wider football pyramid.”
