Wigan chairman Whelan fined and handed six-week ban

Wigan owner, Dave Whelan, has been given a six-week ban from all football-related activity and a £50,000 fine by the FA today after comments made about Jewish and Chinese people.

Whelan has denied making racist remarks and insists that he was misquoted in an interview with The Guardian where he is reported to have said: "Jewish people chase money more than everybody else."

The newspaper also reported that the businessman used the term “chink” in the same interview.

The interview was carried out in the wake of Malky Mackay’s appointment at the club, who is also under FA investigation following the exchange of "sexist, racist and homophobic" text messages during his time in charge at Cardiff.

Whelan has apologised for any offence caused by the comments and requested a non-personal hearing from the Football Association who initially handed down the charge last month.

The FA Disciplinary Commission has said that it is satisfied that Whelan is not a racist and did not intend to cause any offence with his comments.

The Wigan owner now has seven days to appeal the punishment and must also complete a programme of education provided by the FA.
