Wes Hoolahan set to join Cambridge United on trial

Former Republic of Ireland international midfielder Wes Hoolahan looks set to join League Two side Cambridge United on trial, according to reports in the English media today.

The Dublin native left West Bromwich Albion at the end of last season, having made ten appearances for the Baggies across the campaign. West Brom finished 4th in the Championship last season, before losing out to rivals Aston Villa at the play-off semi-final stage.

Slaven Bilić was announced as West Brom's new manager just last week, on a two-year contract. The former Croatia and West Ham boss takes over from caretaker manager James Shan, who took charge during the season.

Cambridge United finished in 21st position in League Two last season, six points clear of relegation to the Football League. Hoolahan is familiar with U's manager Colin Calderwood, having worked together at Norwich City for two years when Calderwood was assistant manager to Chris Hughton at Carrow Road.

Cambridge also have a Norwich link in head of football Ben Strang, who was head of academy recruitment at Colney between 2014 and 2016, before his return to Cambridge.

Hoolahan left Shelbourne and the League of Ireland back in 2005, before going on to make over four hundred appearances in the English and Scottish leagues.

A fan favourite at international level, Hoolahan notched up 43 caps for the Republic of Ireland. He scored three goals during that time at international level also, including a memorable strike against Sweden at the European Championships in France three years ago.

The 37-year-old veteran retired from the international set-up after the Republic of Ireland, then under the guidance of Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane, failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup when they lost convincingly to Denmark at the play-off stage.

He scored scored 54 goals in 352 games for Norwich City between 2008 and 2018, and played in a celebration fund-raising game alongside Russell Martin, which was held at Carrow Road just last month.
