Wenger: France 'super favourites' but England can challenge

Arsene Wenger believes that France are "super favourites" to win Euro 2020 but also picked England as the team who could be their main threat.

"France are not the favourites, they are the super favourite," Wenger told Sky Sports when asked to assess France's chances of success at the upcoming European Championships.

"Favourite is not big enough, because when you win the World Cup and then you have in your team, N'Golo Kante, Paul Pogba, Karim Benzema, Antoine Griezmann, Kingsley Coman, Olivier Giroud, I forget half of them.

"You will have on the bench 11 players who would play basically in any other national team. So you cannot refuse the fact that you are world champion and it's a team which has not peaked.

"It's a team that's still going up, because they're all young these guys. Apart from two or three, the core of the team is very young."

As well as his bullishness over France's chances, Wenger was also very complimentary of England and the squad that Gareth Southgate.

"The English team is for me the team who can most threaten France," he said.

"They are maybe still a bit young some of them but this season with Mason Mount, Phil Foden, they have Jack Grealish, Declan Rice and of course Harry Kane up front and some experienced players like Jordan Henderson.

"I hope for England when a guy like Henderson comes back because he has the hunger, he is a leader as well. And he has a long, good vision and it is important to find the strikers with long balls as well in big tournaments.

"When you add all the offensive talent together, you would say that Gareth Southgate has a headache picking his forward players and also, the problem for Gareth Southgate will be to find good defensive stability. He has been himself, a defender. He's very aware, that this is his biggest challenge."
