Wayne Rooney's Testimonial ends in a dour scoreless draw

Manchester United and Everton continued their pre-season preparations on Wednesday night by playing in Wayne Rooney's Testimonial at Old Trafford.

The England and Manchester United captain left Everton in 2004, but his former club took part in the game which helped children's charities in both Manchester and Liverpool.

A 0-0 draw did nothing to dampen the spirits of Rooney or the crowd as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan made their first home appearances for their new team. It was also the first time Jose Mourinho took charge of Manchester United at Old Trafford since being named manager.

Former Manchester United managers Alex Ferguson and David Moyes, along with the new England manager Sam Allardyce were also in attendance at the game which saw Rooney only line out in the red of Manchester United, despite reports he may have briefly donned the Everton colours.

Speaking after the game, Rooney thanked the fans in attendance for supporting the charities nominated by the 30-year-old.

"I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone here. The money raised will go to children who are in desperate need of it. You should all be proud of yourselves. I’d like to thank Everton for the support they’ve shown, and the Everton fans who have come along."

"I’ve spent 12 seasons here with great success and hopefully there is more to come. You have been great, here’s to hopefully more trophies."
