WATCH | Robert Lewandowski makes history by topping Muller's Bundesliga goalscoring record

Robert Lewandowski continued his eye-catching goalscoring exploits on Saturday by shattering the long-standing record for most goals scored in a single Bundesliga campaign.

Lewandoski notched his 41st goal of the season against Augsburg on Saturday afternoon in the 90th minute with a typically predatory finish.

It means he now leapfrogs another Bayern Munich legend in the single-season goalscoring stakes.

Gerd Muller, a three-time European Cup winner with Bayern Munich and a World Cup winner in 1974 with West Germany, held the record for 49 years.

Who is Gerd Muller?

The German striker had a distinguished career at both club and international level.

Muller scored 62 goals in 62 appearances for Germany. This included the winner in the 1974 World Cup final in West Germany's 2-1 over Johan Cruyff's sparkling Netherlands side.

During his decorated 15-year spell in Munich, Muller found the net 398th times in 453 league appearances.

Muller, who is Bayern's all-time leading goalscorer, looked set to hold onto the record as the Bavarian's led at home to Augsburg before Lewandowski pounced late on to score.

Record-breaking Lewandowski

The Polish striker had drawn level with Muller last weekend after scoring from the penalty spot in Bayern's 2-1 away to Freiburg.

It looked like he would have to settle for equalling the record until his tap-in during Bayern's final league game of the season.

The Bavarian's cruised to their ninth Bundesliga title two week's ago, sealing the championship with three games to spare.

Unfortunately for Lewandowski and co. they surrendered their European crown at the quarter-final stage of the Champions League losing out to Paris St Germain.

With Bayern going for a tenth league title in a row next year, Lewandowski will be looking to close the gap to Muller atop of the all-time goalscorer list.

Bayern head coach, Hansi Flick signed off with another trophy to add to last year's continental treble. Flick is expected to take over as head coach of the German national team after this summer's European Championships.
