Borussia Dortmund defeated Legia Warsaw 8-4 on Tuesday night, in the Champions League.
The 12 goals, with seven coming in the first half, broke the 13-year record, which was held by Monaco and Deportivo La Coruna.
Nine different players scored in the match, with Legia Warsaw's Jakub Rzezniczak scoring the historic own-goal in the final moments.
While the game in Dortmund broke the record, it should be remembered of the three games before it that were on the so-called podium in the Champions League pantheon.
Monaco 8-3 Deportivo La Coruna (November 2003)
Croatia international Dado Prso scored four goals in the game that saw the Ligue 1 side eventually top the Group C table.
Monaco led 4-0 inside 30 minutes, with Jerome Rothen and Ludovic Giuly scoring inside the opening 15 minutes, before Prso went on a scoring rampage for Didier Deschamps' side.
The Spanish outfit closed the scoreline to 4-2 just before half-time, and scored again to make the game 7-3, before Monaco's Edouard Cisse notched the game's final goal.
Surprisingly no goals were scored in the final 20 minutes.
Paris Saint-Germain 7-2 Rosenborg (October 2000)
Chister George scored two goals for Rosenborg in the space of three first-half minutes. Unluckily for the Norwegian side, PSG scored seven goals either side.
After trailing 3-0 early in the game, Rosenborg got the game back to 3-2, before the Parisian side ran away with the match in the second half.
Such was the period the side were in compared to the multi-millionaires of the modern side, a young Nicolas Anelka and Laurent Robert were among the scorers for PSG.
Lyon 7-2 Werder Bremen (March 2005)
Having won 3-0 in Germany in the first leg, Lyon ensured their place in the quarter-finals with a 7-2 win, to advance 10-2 on aggregate.
Lyon's side was dominated by future Premier League stars, with Sylvain Wiltord scoring a hat-trick, Michael Essien getting two and Flourent Malouda also adding his name to the scoresheet.
While there have only been nine goals or more scored in four games, there have been two 8-0 and two 4-4 results in Champions League history. Both 8-0 wins came in the group stages with Liverpool defeating Besiktas 8-0 in Anfield in 2007 as Yossi Benayoun scored a hat-trick.
Last year Real Madrid beat Malmo 8-0 in the Bernabeu. Cristiano Ronaldo scored four goals in the game. Both Liverpool and Real Madrid hold the record for the largest wins in the Champions League era. It's fitting that two of the five most successful team in the history of the European Cup should hold the record.
The two 4-4 draws came in 2000 and 2009. Hamburg drew with Juventus in the group stages, while Chelsea and Liverpool drew in the quarter-finals. Half of those goals came in the final 15 minutes of that memorable game at Stamford Bridge.
