WATCH: Iceland players given a hero's homecoming in Reykjavik

When Euro 2016 is looked back upon in years to come, the performances of Iceland will live long in the memory.

The smallest team ever to compete in the European Championships, Iceland defeated Austria and England on the way to the quarter-finals. While the team lost 5-2 to France on Sunday, they still returned home to a hero's welcome in Reykjavik.

An open-top bus through the streets of the capital, was followed by a homecoming event in the Arnarhóll area of the city. 24 hours previously, thousands of fans had congregated in the same area to watch the team play France.

The highlight of the homecoming was undoubtedly what Iceland's fans will be best remembered for this summer; the Viking Thunderclap. Led by captain Aron Gunnarsson, the squad and fans joined together as one, for one last time on such an unforgettable journey.

Men and women, boys and girls, young and old, were all in attendance in Arnarhóll. The performance of the team in France has reinvigorated a country which has gone through a difficult period in its history.

The 23 players along with joint-managers Lars Lagerbeck and Heimir Hallgrimsson have become national icons for their actions and performances on the World stage.
