WATCH: Danish fans throw dead rats at opposition players

Fans throwing foreign objects on to a pitch is not an unusual occurrence in sport.

Whether it's Luis Figo being greeted by a pig's head when taking a corner for Real Madrid against Barcelona, or a sex toy being thrown on the pitch in Buffalo during an NFL game last season, fans will find ways of smuggling unusual objects into a stadium.

Brondby and FC Copenhagen met on Sunday afternoon in a Danish Superliga clash. The rivals are Denmark's top two teams, with Copenhagen on course to win their second title in a row, having gone into the game with a nine point advantage.

With five minutes left in the game and Copenhagen leading 1-0 away from home, their defender Ludwig Augustinsson went to take a corner in front of Brondby's fans.

The Swedish defender, who has never played for Brondby, was greeted by the home fans, with a mischief of dead rats being thrown onto the pitch. A clearly shocked Augustinsson along with Benjamin Verbic, were forced to kick the dead animals off the pitch.

Augustinsson and his team mates had the last laugh though, winning the game 1-0. What does need to be asked is, why would fans bring dead rats to a game?

Why would they want to throw them at a player with no former allegiance to their club, and most importantly, why would Brondby's fans keep a rat in their pocket for hours, to disperse with it so late in the game?
