But in their last knockout game, fortune from the penalty spot shined on them as they overcame Poland.
Cristiano Ronaldo took and scored the first penalty for his country in the shootout but one of the Portuguese players who scored one of the later attempts would not have taken one but for the captain's insistence.
Third on the list Joao Moutinho - a high-profile and experienced player in his own right - had to be vocally persuaded to take a penalty by Ronaldo.
The Real Madrid attacker reasoned that it was "in God's hands now" and encouraged him by saying "you hit [penalties] well:
