In a tournament which has already been mired by fan related violence, there were further hostilities last night which have resulted in Croatia and Turkey both being charged.
Flares were thrown onto the Saint-Etienne pitch during Croatia's game against Czech Republic, which prompted the referee to temporarily suspend the game in the final five minutes of the game. European football's governing body has now confirmed the opening of disciplinary proceedings against the national federation.
A steward, and the Croatian goalscorer Ivan Perisic, were lucky to evade injury after almost being struck by a firecracker.
The Croatia coach Ante Cacic publicly criticised the actions of the fans and compared their behaviour to that of 'sports terrorists.'
"These people are really scary, that is why I call them hooligans. These are not really Croatian supporters. These are sports terrorists. The main thing our country doesn't want to mess with are these kind of hooligans."
The Croatian federation has a previous record of indiscipline at football games. Flares were thrown onto the pitch during a Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy in November 2014. The return game the following June was played behind closed doors as punishment for racists behaviour during a game against Norway two months earlier.
Turkey have also been charged over crowd disturbances during their match against Spain on Friday evening, which include setting off fireworks, throwing objects and racist behaviour. Hearings are expected to follow on Monday.
