'There were two or three Liverpools' - Graeme Souness on LFC performance

Graeme Souness believes that several faces to this Liverpool were on show in their dramatic 4-3 win over RB Salzburg this evening.

Speaking on Virgin Media Sport, Souness believes that Reds fans can be ultimately happy with the result but that the performance was not as polished as others in recent times.

"It was two Liverpools we saw tonight - maybe even three. It was the fantastic Liverpool; the football that you want to see as a supporter.

"Then the knocking off and the rocking for a period, which you would not be happy about.

"Then they dug in and you could say that they won ugly in the end. Forgetting all the fabulous football in the first half - the winning goal was a scruffy old goal.

"They weren't the free-moving, silky-passing Liverpool," Souness told Virgin Media Sport.

Souness also believes that a change in midfield helped the Reds.

"The introduction of Milner helped them. Henderson had got carried away a few times with the silky passing and moving that they showed in the first part of the game.

"James Milner comes on and he is rock solid."

Ultimately, however, Souness was satisfied with a job done for Liverpool.

"Some of [Liverpool's] football in the first half was delightful. At 3-0, they thought they were in their armchair.

"It just shows you that, at this level, if you knock off and lose momentum and the opposition get a goal - you become the nervy ones.

"You have to give great credit to Salzburg. Anyone who has played at Anfield knows that it is a very hard place to get a result. On European nights it is even harder."
