LISTEN: 'An easy target for this is Andy Townsend'

"It's a game of two halves" ... "A cultured left foot" ... "great feet for a big man" ... "a cold, wet night in Stoke".

These are just a small selection of the set phrases that our ears have become accustomed to as we watch football.

But why do they exist and why do certain words and phrases like "lambaste" and "bust-up" not work outside of a non-football context?

This week on Team 33, we delved into something we are probably guilty of ourselves - the art of the football cliché.

One guy who knows a thing or two about it is author Adam Hurrey, who penned the brilliant Football Clichés, a book which goes through every old and modern cliché known to the game.

From a clip of Tim Sherwood running through a few well-worn phrases to the cliché-filled style of Andy Townsend, Hurrey took us through the history some of the prolific advocates of the genre.
