Tallaght Stadium given the go-ahead for third stand

Tallaght Stadium, the home of Shamrock Rovers, is to have a third stand built.

The Stadium, which opened in March 2009, originally only saw one stand opened to the public. Later that summer, a second stand was opened. Both run along each side of the pitch.

At their monthly meeting, South Dublin county councillors released funds for the stand to be built in the south end of the stadium. It is reported to cost just under €2 million.

Councillor Dermot Looney told the Tallaght Echo, the expansion will allow the stadium hold bigger events.

“It certainly brings the stadium up to scratch to hold bigger and better games and other events - it will make it more attractive for concerts, for example."

“I think Tallaght Stadium has been a good news story for Tallaght, and its continued development will be good news not just for Shamrock Rovers or football, but for the area in general.”

The stadium has hosted Dundalk's Europa League games this season, but the champions had to play in the Aviva Stadium, for the Champions League play-off against Legia Warsaw. A third stand would allow the stadium to host games of that stature.

A new stand, will increase Tallaght's capacity to 8,000, making it the largest League of Ireland ground in the country, overtaking Turner's Cross.

Despite being the home to Shamrock Rovers, Tallaght Stadium has previously hosted rugby matches in both codes, and is the annual venue for American Football's 'Shamrock Bowl'.
