"I've always stayed in touch with Roy" - Steven Reid on how he joined Hodgson's Crystal Palace

Seven games into the Premier League season and the table makes for grim reading for anyone connected to Crystal Palace.

The South London club have failed to pick up a single win or draw and are propping up the table with another record that raises eyebrows.

In their seven games, not a single goal has been scored by the Eagles and the sacking of Frank de Boer and arrival of Roy Hodgson has not changed that trend one iota so far. Seventeen goals have been conceded so far.

Former Ireland midfielder Steven Reid joined Hodgson's backroom coaching staff and last night he touched on the challenge for the club after he and Professor John Brewer chatted to Joe and Kevin about the issue of painkiller use in football.

Reid had spoken to us back in late August when he had stepped away from his first team coaching role at Reading in order to take a break from the game. The ex-Blackburn midfielder explained why he has chosen to make a return.

"At that time, I just needed to take a step away and almost just improve my own education in the game and go out and watch games, go and speak to a few managers, enjoy family time for a while," he said.

"But it wasn't for too long and when the opportunity came.

"It literally did come out of the blue. I've always stayed in touch with Roy, ever since he was my manager at West Brom and when he went on to manage England, we always stayed in touch but it did come out of the blue. But the opportunity just felt completely right for me and it's going to be a big challenge ahead.

"Obviously, everyone's probably well aware of the start of the season that we've had, but just really enjoying it despite the position. It really is good to be back there on the grass and hopefully sooner rather than later we can turn the corner."
